#Environment - Eat less meat

Eating less meat helps the environment in many ways. The meat industry produces a lot of greenhouse gas, and also uses a lot of land and water. Eating less meat can reduce these negative effects. Raising animals for meat also uses a lot of resources that could be used to feed people in a more ethical way. What we choose to eat affects the environment and the future. By eating less meat, we can help create a better future for ourselves and for everyone. So, next time you eat, think about how your choices can make the world a better place.

Fish Fridays?

The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales is asking Catholics to stop eating meat on Fridays. In the past it became traditional to eat fish on Fridays. As well as being of religious significance for us as individuals, this has a tremendous effect on the environment. Studies for the UK show that not eating meat on Fridays cuts down on carbon emissions by 55,000 tonnes each year. That’s like 82,000 people flying from London to New York and back.

In abstaining from meat on Fridays, we also act in solidarity with those who face hunger and poverty every day, with the care of creation by recognising the environmental impact of meat production and in memory of the death of Christ, by which our broken relationships with each other and with God’s creation are healed.
