Single Use Plastics
Cling Film and plastic bags
Cling film, also known as plastic wrap or saran wrap, is a single-use plastic that contributes to environmental pollution. According to Keep Britain Tidy, more than 1.2 billion metres of cling film is used by British households every year alone; enough to wrap around the circumference of the earth 30 times.
I have been reviewing my recipes and and updating them. In practice, I am already rarely using cling film in my own kitchen – but I must admit there is still a roll there for occasional use. I think back to my grandparents generation to whom cling film was not available and incidentally had no fridge either, and I think what would they have done, Fortunately, there are several eco-friendly alternatives you can use instead. Here are some environmentally friendly options for food storage:
Traditional
Glass or Stainless Steel Containers
Use glass or stainless steel containers with airtight lids for storing leftovers, meal prepping. They are durable, non-toxic, and can be easily cleaned. I re-use glass jars from other products that have been bought. I remove the labels by soaking in water. I generally keep they same type of jars so that they match, some large, some small.
Kilner/Mason Jars:
Jars are versatile containers that can be used for storing food, beverages, or ingredients. They are reusable, come in different sizes, and have airtight lids that help preserve freshness.
Cloth wraps or covers
Cloth wraps or covers made from organic cotton or linen can be used to cover bowls, plates, or wrap sandwiches and snacks. They can be washed and reused, reducing waste. 10″ cotton covers are great for bowls
Aluminium Foil
Aluminium Foil (with caution): While not good for long-term food storage or acidic foods, aluminium foil can be a temporary option for wrapping or covering food. It is recyclable: it must be fairly clean with minimal traces of food. but be mindful of reducing its use to minimise environmental impact
Newer methods
Beeswax Wraps
Beeswax wraps are made from organic cotton coated with beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin. They can be moulded around food or containers, creating a seal. They are reusable, washable, and compostable.
Silicone Stretch Lids
Silicone stretch lids are flexible, reusable lids that can stretch to fit various sizes of bowls, tins, or containers. They create an airtight seal and can be washed and reused.
Reusable Silicone Bags
Silicone food storage bags are a durable and reusable alternative to plastic bags. They are airtight, can be washed, and are suitable for storing various types of food
Reuse your plastic bags
If you do use plastic bags, then do wash and re-use them where possible. The thicker zip-lock bags can be used many times. I have also used these to cover awkward shape containers
Shopping and food packaging
Try to buy foods without packaging or that are in 100% recyclable packaging. Buy loose vegetables and take small re-usable mesh bags with you.
